Doctor. Mum in the house !

Hello ! This is going to be a pretty lengthy post because "Doctor Mum" is going to share with you how she deals with some common ailments like fever and common cold in the house. Read on for some tips and experience I have accumulated these years ever since I started to take on my role as a mum.

Being the main caregiver for Xav for his first 3.5 years and during the 2 years when I had my helper and now that am back to being his main caregiver again. I do still call the shots at home with regards to his diet and what to administer to him when he is feeling under the weather.

Xav is very prone to falling sick in his first 3 .5 years. Definitely not something I wish for nor wanted to happen so frequently. I wonder where went wrong too. He was a breastfed baby for one year, I thought immunity would be better but ...

Anyway, each time he was sick, it was always the same diagnosis but with a different degree of how bad the condition has escalated. The kitchen cabinet would be partially filled with his medication (and yes each visit to the PD, I will come back with the same medication probably with a different type of antibiotics when it's out of control)

As I was writing this post, I was surprised that I rely more on Chinese herbs than western medications.

Let's begin at the babies stage. Most commonly dealt issues are  jaundice, diaper rash & heat rash.

- Jaundice : Both Xav and Vera got it and Vera got it worse, lasting for the whole entire month. We brought her for sunning in the morning and evenings. And I cut back on Chinese herbs during my confinement.

- Diaper Rash : You can treat diaper rash by soaking the butt or cleaning it with honey suckles flowers. Simply boil a handful and cool it for cleaning during bath time.

- Heat Rash : I heard about using beer to bathe baby in as beer itself has cooling effects. I tried this time round with bittergourd cane.

Most of the confinement nannies should know about this. My mum managed to find it at Chinatown wet market. I bathed Vera in it and used the water to clear the rashes on her face as well ! After three days, all cleared !

- Fever, the most commonly dealt with was fever, cough and cold. Being a first time mum, I "panicked" when his temperature was raging at 38.7 - 39 Deg C for 5 days straight. Thankfully, I had a reliable PD to fall back on and reassured me that he be fine after 5-8 days (normally when fever will break)

Subsequent fever episodes, I was calm. I was taught by the PD to make observations:
-  He is still his active, bubbly self and no sign of lethargic and can still  play as per normal.
-  He can still take his meals as per normal.

What would you have done if you have seen a slightly higher than normal body temperature  ? For me,  I would now only administer Paracetamol only if his temperature hits 38 Deg C. It's good to let the body "fight" for a while. Ibrufen will only comes in if fever spikes above 38.5 Deg C after an hour after giving paracetamol.

I will alternate between Paracetamol and Ibrufen every three hourly, which makes each to be 6 hourly apart in cases of really high fever. Following this, I know I wont be over dosing him.

* I was advised to always give Paracetamol first even if fever is above 38.5 Deg C. Ibrufen will always act as a backup.

I will still bathe him but not with cold water, as it may shock him. It will be slightly cooler below lukewarm, water mat for him to lie on and sponge him with peppermint water.

On top of the above, minus the paracetamol. I have been oiling Xav with peppermint, lemon and thieves when he has fever. But I am relived that I have yet to have the chance to oil him that often for it. *Cross finger*

About 9 months ago, I was introduced to use 100% pure therapeutic essential oils to replace the use of drugs. It has been working well till now for the family, especially Xav. Read my review HERE. (Do drop me an email or pm me on Facebook if you are keen to learn the oiling applications and usage of the oils. I be glad to share it with you.)

One way to check if Xav is falling sick any time (Sign of heatiness in the body)
- Bad breathe
- Red lips with a "red" line on the lower lips
- Really smelly poo

These indications will tell me it's time to check his throat. Most of the time I can see a red spot near his throat (Always on his left I wonder why). The TCM told me, once this red spot "breaks" and turn into ulcer, fever will kick in and I was spot on several episodes.

I have always stock up :
Baby Chrysanthemum Flowers (I normally buy at Hock Hwa or ZTP)
Honey Suckles flowers
China Barley (I normally will not get the English Barley as I was told that they caused more phlegm)

Some simple recipes to reduce the heatiness:
- Chrysanthemum flowers by itself. Pour hot water over it and cover it with a lid.
- Chrysanthemum flowers + honey suckles flowers
This is really good for HFMD and hazy period.

Should you be going for any deep fried food or bbq food that can cause sore throat if excessively consumed, do always remember to drink some Liang Teh after that to counter against the heaty effect. Some cucumbers, coconut or water chestnuts do the job too !

- Cough is one of the trickiest condition to tackle in my opinion. Xav faced this issued which escalated with wheezing every three months and was hospitalized twice for lung infection. (The string of wheezing episodes HERE) I have tried literally everything from TCM (Tradition Chinese Medicine ), Kids; Meridian Massage, Respiratory Specialist.

Thankfully after his first visit to CT Yeo, we bid goodbye to his wheezing. His condition is well under control but on the side that he has to take his daily dosage of Singulair, Nasonex and Seretide. My cabinet always have Zyrtec and Kaloba Herbal Syrup on standby.

Kaloba works quite well for both dry and wet (Phlegmy) cough and it's non drowsy. I feel more comfortable giving it to Xav as compared to other cough syrup.

As he progressed, he was gradually cut off Nasonex and the puffer. Now he is only taking Singulair. On top of these, I have to note for his sensitive airways, the diet and environmental factor plays a part. His room has to be kept dust free.

Diet as per what the doctors and sinseh advised:
- No citrus fruits like Orange, coloured fruits or fruits that have berries in their name for instance: Blue berries, Strawberries etc.
- Sweet and sugary stuff, jam, sweets, chcocolates especially is a No-No for Xav. Once he eats them, he gets phlegmy.
- Food with preservatives as well to be cut off. Every year before CNY approaches, Dr Yeo will remind us not to give Yu Sheng and off the shelves pineapple tarts and stuffs as they have preservatives in them.
- My tcm's advice is no chicken and egg yolk. Chicken will prolonged coughs and yolks tends to produce more phlegm. No dairies like cheese and cow's milk. I will normally substitute with soy milk until he recovers.
- Do not take Cordyceps if cough is really bad. Cordyceps can be good for cough. But if you use on the wrong type of cough, not only it does not help but it will hinder the recovery process. Should you be unwell, stay clear from herbs. Consume it only after you recover to build up your immunity.

There are some herbs pretty good for coughs, you can read up my humble notes on herbs here for my own references. (Feel free to share more with me if you have more to add)

Natural remedies Now am going towards drug free direction with the use of Young Living Essential oils. These are the range I have to target for cough and cold ailments.  I have even stop giving Kaloba Syrup though yes, it is a herbal mixture and safe to consume until you recover. (Xav used to drink it like plain water. At any point of time, my cabinet will have 3-5 bottles stocked up )

The range of oils I have to tackle the cough and cold.
 - Vegetables can help too !  Skin one big onion and cut into quarters. Place the bowl of onions next to the bed. I'm thankful that Xav is really easy with anything including the smell of the freshly cut onions. The onions will help to kill the bacterial in the body when  you inhaled in and absorbs the virus and germs when you breathe out. Do note to discard the "contaminated" onions away and not to use them to cook for meals.

- Swimming is good ! So far I see the improvement in Xav after a year. It helps to strengthen the lungs.

- Warm shower helps to dispel the mucus out. I normally got Xav to blow out and clear his nose during shower and have frequent warm water to "melt" the phlegm.

- Massage behind the shoulder blade all the way down to the mid of the back, with your thumbs pushing apart.

Soup recipes for the coughs;
- Pear soup with fig fruit with Fritillaria and Kernel Almonds

 Apple Soup with Kernel Almonds

Lotus Roots with solomonseal Rhizome soup

- Lean Meat with chestnut

To nourish the lungs:

Double boiled papaya & Snow fungus soup
If the haze has been affecting and aggravating the condition, what I did to combat that HAZE was to diffuse Purification, it cleans up the air really effectively. It can even help for prolonged cough by applying on the sides of the throat.

Soup that helps during hazy season;

Lotus Roots with Green Beans & Water Chestnut
 - Diarrhea, normally I will try to see if Yakult works. I will standby probiotics (Preferred Biogaia). My dad will ask me to open up a can of pineapple and munch on them. It helps for him.

- For mozzie bites and cuts. Before I started on oiling. I will have tubs  of Aloe Vera standing-by in my fridge. It helps to soothe the bites but it does not help with the swelling. Xav has pretty bad insect bite allergies but with the use of Lavender and Purification. It does not even swell a bit ! Lavender can seriously do wonder even in cases of Eczema.

So far I have not really encounter frequent vomiting or food poisoning encounters. I have realised most of the time I have self medicated at home with the PD or GP's instructions and so far am doing pretty good, staying away from the clinics). I just came to realise Xav's last visit to the doctor for fever and cold is more than a year ago !

Do note that all the above are tried by me and it works for Xav. Each individual body is different and results may varies. Do share with me on your Dr. Mum's role at home and how you are coping with it.

Someone came grooving towards me when I clicked on the link to check out the songs ! Something different out of the usual nursery rhymes, check out Gerry Rhymes !

Released by our home grown artist, Ms Geraldine Png (Singer/Song Writer) who had chosen to go abroad (Los Angeles) to pursue her new kind of happiness ...

"Gerry Rhymes" is co-produced Gerry and her husband; Bert Lindsey (Music Arranger for Gerry Rhymes Album)

"Gerry Rhymes" is a refreshing twist of pop, jazz fushion & classical genre combination,  making it unique and appealed to both adults and children. Hence, Gerry gave the album a tagline "For kids Ages One to Ninety- Two". It is definitely not be the usual boring repetitive rhymes that you be bored with after playing and listening to for a few days.

No prize for guessing which is my favourite track. I love the very first track "Yankee Doodle" when I first played the disc. The beginning had captured my attention and followed the song through out. I thought it sounded pretty whimsical !

As for Xav he was singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" exactly the same version as "Gerry Rhymes" for the rest of the evening. He got the catchy tunes right in his head !

A total of 17 Tracks of which Track 1 -8 are nursery rhymes which you have been singing since you were a child ! Track 9 - 16 are stories with music narrated by Ms Choon Mah-Meggett and the final track "Child In Your Eyes".

{3rd Party Review + Giveaway } More than just reading from I.LOVE.READING Magazines

Cultivating a love for reading may not just be from reading solely from a book. I have nurtured an independent, young reader. He reads and widens his knowledge from the materials he came across. Apart from books, we read everywhere, from the posters and advertisements at the MRT stations, signboards on the road, phamplets and flyers etc. Learning from magazines are not new to him.

Xav loves books but he loves magazines even more ! He was glued to the six copies of I.love.Reading series when he first received them  (Volume 2, Issue 7 - 12) ;
- Pets Are Special
- Our Precious Planet
- Staying healthy and happy with Stella and Stan
- Creatures of The Sea
- Community Helper
- Kindness Matters

I.love.Reading, is suitable for children from age 5 - 9. It seeks to develop the joy of reading in children and to complement their learning through a series of well thought out stories and activities. It centres around three main characters a brother and sister name Stan and Stella; and Lulu, a ‘magical’ monkey.

But wait ! Who says children under age of 4 can't read together ! I.love.Reading is made compatible with Pen Pal Whizz. Xav used it and read through the magazine with Vera.  She was very much attracted to the talking pen ! Read about my reviews HERE.

It became a nice bonding session for the pair of siblings, reading through the magazines together.

As Xav read, he came across questions that were set within the stories to help develop critical thinking skills, comprehension as well as to allow him to develop empathy towards the characters in the stories.

Apart from stories, I.love.Reading has fun activities like words scrambles, word searches, spot the differences, mazes and simple crafts, are some fun ways to help develop skills such as fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination and word recognition.

Word Scrambles
Spot the difference

Various little act of kindness which you can easily pick up and remind yourselves. I have been observing him for quite some time. My little gentleman here, knows when to give up his seat to the ones in need like the elderly and mummies carrying a child in their arms. He can learn more of other little act of kindness through I.love.Reading series - Kindness Matters .

From the magazines, learn about Science as well ! I have definitely picked up the shells before as shown below but did not know their names. Even I'm learning from I.love.Reading !

Identify and name those shells

One of Xav's favourite topic - Food and Nutrition. At times, he could talk about it non stop and "lecture" me on what kind of healthy food I should be eating.

Food Detective - Guess the food !

Some tips in taking care of our Planet Earth.

Tips on caring for planet earth
I love this especially when it tells more about the unusual occupations that people may not look up to - the cleaners and rubbish collectors. I always remind Xav that without them, we will be having  rubbish all around us and using dirty washrooms in the malls.

Teaching children what numbers to call in case of emergency or not. Perhaps, you may want to read through an incident which I came across and determine if that was an emergency or non emergency situation.

Not only it's educational, it's fun and engaging too! I.love.Reading comes in Volume 1 and 2  consisting of 6 issues per volume (e.g. total 12 issues in both volumes)

The usual price for each volume is $22 and there is a current promotion going on for both volumes in a bundle is $35 (Inclusive of GST). Pretty affordable for a year, don't you agree ?

Giveaway Alert ! JLB has kindly sponsored a set for one lucky reader here. If you wish to win a set of I.love.Reading Volume 2 consisting of 6 magazines, do leave a comment indicating how would the magazines benefit your child/children and not forgetting your email address after the comments.

[Screensavers ] Technology should be a tool, not a burden or a health risk !

Ask Xav if he likes my mobile phone better or his daddy's. He will immediately tell you "Daddy's" ! I, myself is not a fan of mobile games, what you can find in my phone are nothing but applications for editing photos and some educational application for learning. I DO NOT use gadgets to babysit Xav. Yes no doubt about this, let the kids entertain themselves and peace will reign. This is what is happening.

Xav is turning 6 this month. So far, he has been exposed to the television screen (since 6 months old) but for a maximum span of 30 mins a day when I need to cook. Now that he is much older, most of the time when we are home, without the daddy, the television will not be switched on. But if the daddy is around, it's the total opposite ! It's his means of de-stressing after a long day at work, I can't possibly stop.

For Xav, I have not officially exposed him to the Internet world and have no intention to get him exposed at such an early stage. It was only recently he was tasked with an assignment to look up for facts of a certain animal and to do some read up on it. I sat beside and guided him along teaching him how to GOOGLE for it. You know GOOGLE have it all !

I received an email from one of the students from NTU's Wee Kim Wee School who is involved in a campaign encouraging healthy digital technology habits amongst children, titled Screensavers. The campaign works to nurture healthier digital kids through activities involving parent-child interaction, and features six Screen Tips as seen below.

I thought why not ! Xav does not get to lay his hands on the Ipad and other electronic gadgets when I'm with him. He only gets it from the daddy and his aunt. For myself, I have to confess on the part where my mobile phone is always within my sight or glued to my hand replying in the various Watsapp group chat most of the time (yes, am guilty of that and am trying hard to cut away from my mobile as well as surfing FACEBOOK when am with the kids) They do observe us, if you read back on this post on what Xav praised me about.

One fine afternoon, in the foodcourt, I came across a mum, who allowed her child to glue his eyes to the Ipad. She fed him while his hands were kept busy playing on the Ipad during his meal time (To note, am not trying to pin point any parents who needs these gadgets to get their kids to eat) but in my opinion, the child should be trained to be more independent. In my case, yes. Call me a tiger mum  if you need to. But Xav has been trained and I would need him to be more independent since I have to cater to the needs of the younger one.

More often than not, most parents think that letting the kids play with the gadgets is stimulating them and more likely their way of giving their form of love to the children. But they are not aware of what it can lead to when the kids are being excessively exposed to, especially the significant impact on their mental health.

Tell tale signs that the kids are addicted to the gadgets & technology:

1.  Losing interest and see no joy in doing other activities such as going for movies or outdoor   play, except for playing with the games on the Ipad/ Smartphones.

2. Watch that mood swings ! Kids, can get downright irritable and aggressive, crying or screaming, when told to stop with the gadgets or when gadgets were being removed from them. (Sounds similar to that of drugs) You could see signs of anxiety and depression in them.

Some kids used IPad to avoid dealing with negative emotions could have a problem too. For instance, after a fight with a sibling or a parent, if your kid always grabs the IPad he may be coping with his negative emotions with it.

(Similarly to a demand fed baby, each time baby cries you feed him/ her with milk, the baby will in turn feel happy and satisfied. When the baby grows up,  tendency of using eating as a method to overcome the negative emotions and feel happy, could be there.)

3. Technology addiction can impact a child's sleep, interfere with meal times and eating habits and make children act up during play time.

4. Difficulty paying attention. Check out with their teachers if the child is facing this problem in school as well.

5. Turning into Pinochio, with their nose growing longer as they lied to have more time with the gadget under their blanket!

When these signs are showing, you know it's time for a DIGITAL DETOX !

Some ways which you can "DETOX"  :
- Set a time limit to play with the gadget. Establish a maximum daily time allowance. Parents themselves can try to follow by it and engage the kids. This will prevent the formation of unhealthy dependence on it.

- Planned for outdoor activities ! The children need to expand their energy. Bring them to the park, to the playground. Check out Singapore's largest thematic outdoor playground - Westgate Wonderland !

- Plan for a jogging or cycling session with your little buddy. Am sure they would be more than happy !

- I'm trying very hard to leave my mobile phone aside during meal times and just enjoy the bonding over meals, giving Xav all the attention if I can.

- End the day before going to bed with a story rather than giving the child the Ipad just right before to bed.

- Protect the eyes by giving it a rest by looking at something green to relax your eyes. Some eye exercise which you can carry out if you do not have the chance to move away from your seat. Move your eyes around clockwise, left to right and from top to bottom.Repeat it 3 times each for relaxing your eyes.

So much so for addiction and detox tip. Hope by Mylilbookworm where Mummy Jenn shared some tips on prevention of inappropriate content exposure.

Something for the March Holidays if you have yet to plan for any activity, join the Screensavers Team at their Screensavers' Day Out ! It's an event organised by the three undergraduates from NTU to encourage families to have more outdoor fun while learning about healthy digital technology use, particularly through six Screen Tips :)

What you could be expecting; Screensavers Trail that your family can complete together, learning at the Screensavers exhibit, a CitiBlocs station, a bouncy castle, face painting and balloon sculpting! Mark down these two dates !

I could have just walked away but am glad I did not ......

{Backlog}This incident happened last Tuesday.

Have you ever come across massive traffic jam on the expressway, with signboard displaying "accident on lane XX, slow traffic" but having to finally drive past the scene where the collision took place and the road was so CLEAR after that scene.

Are you one of those drivers who will just drive straight away so as not to hold up the traffic OR
are you the type who will slow down, hoping to catch a glimpse of what happened, snap a picture, send it to STOMP and share it on your social media ?

Anyway, the incident I came across was not a RTA. I was rushing to the foodcourt to pack some food. I was walking hastily along the pavement when I spotted someone lying on the ground from about 30-40 steps away, just along side the grass patch where there was a "mini slope" from the Kou Fu Foodcourt to the ground level, under the scorching hot sun. Apparently, there were a few people walking down from the staircase where they could easily spot that person or rather those walking on the ground level could easily spot that person too. But nobody went over, they just walked on.

Somehow I got an instinct (probably still having the man  woman-in-blue instinct) that the person lying there was not a drunkard. I went over, it with the person back-facing me, the shirt was printed with a cleaning company's name. I turned the unconscious victim ( do not know if she was injured) lying on the ground, to my surprise, it was an auntie in her 60s,  it immediately struck my mind that she could be the dish collector for Kou Fu Food Court). I tried to wake her up by pressing onto the area below her ear lobe. (You can try it on yourself, I have used this to try waking up drunkards during my policing days). But she did not response to me.

Immediately, I called 995 (not knowing if her life is at risk or not) to ask for assistance. But in times of non emergency, you can call 1777  for a Non Emergency Ambulance
Check out SCDF Website for other information that you would like to know.

It was only when people saw me trying to wake her up, started to come forward. The patrons from beyond that mini slope, too started to notice something actually happened and came forward to watch the "show".

It just came to my mind, the aunty could have slipped and rolled down the slope while sweeping the area on top as I saw the broom and the dustpan left standing at the edge of the slope. But why would nobody sitting at the smoking area saw her rolling down ? Simply BO CHAP or they really did not notice the lady.

The supervisor of this lady then came with some other staff and tried waking the lady. I had kindly went over to her and inform her to prepare the auntie's Identity Card as the Paramedic would need it when he/she arrived at scene. The reply I got from her was "NO,  NO, don't call the ambulance, no money to pay" ! I "told her off" nicely that if she is going to be responsible should the lady passed on without medical assistance rendered.

Fortunately, the auntie regained conscious after they rubbed some ointment on her. She insisted not to be conveyed as it was expensive to pay for that ride to the hospital and it was not her first time losing her conscious anyway. I firmly reassured her that she need not be conveyed if the paramedic has checked on her thereafter and ensured that she is in good condition not to be conveyed.

Under such circumstances,
1. If you spotted someone lying unconscious and is feeling frightful to go near. Ask for help from the passer-bys and call for assistance.

2. If you are brave enough, go up to the unconscious and check if the victim is still breathing. The operator would need you to provide with the status of the victim. (Breathing or not breathing, any response etc)

* Do note that it is provided that your kids are not with you else do not go forward. The kids' safety always come first on top of anything !

3. Should you suspect of any foul play, call the Police at 999 and do not be detective yourself.

I made my way back whilst the others were with her waiting for the paramedic. I just felt great that I could have save her life in this instance and I do hope that people around us can be more observant to what is going on around them. Do not shun away for fear of any trouble or follow up that would need your assistance. After all, I'm sure we do hope that people help to look for each other ? That's definitely for me, not sure if you do hold the same view as me.

Sage Formula Beginning Book 1

Recently, I'm seriously mad busy with the pre-schooler and baby due to her eczema flare on her arms ! I have to watch her like a hawk until I hardly can get anything done and to teach Xav.

Finally, a little on this day and a little on the other, I typed and created a simple worksheet that allows me to revise what I have covered with Xav. We are almost done with the SAGE FORMULA Beginning Book 1.

The worksheet contains all the characters in Beginning Book 1. I added some brackets for Xav to fill in the number of strokes in a character. After this was done, I continued to get him to number the strokes of a character in the correct sequence.

At a later stage, once he learnt how to write Han Yu Pin Yin, I will get him to write below the characters.

Any more ideas that you can think of apart from putting the above. It's a really simple worksheet if you all don't mind. (Mai hiam ok ) You can print it HERE.
