Singapore's largest thematic outdoor playground - Westgate Wonderland !

It's officially opened on the 26th February 2014 ! Westgate, the first family-friendly mall in Singapore, with the largest thematic outdoor playground. Not only families get to have a great time spending a day of shopping & dining at the mall, young shoppers can now expand their energy at Westgate Wonderland, located on Level 4 of the mall.

Westgate Wonderland with a larger-than-life garden theme, featuring both dry and wet play areas. Definitely a great place for the young shoppers to have hours of fun there and it's open to public for FREE, daily from 10 am - 10 pm.

Be welcomed by the huge and brightly coloured displays in the playground ! Let the pictures do the talking !

We walked further in and spotted this really pretty caterpillar in vibrant, rainbow colours !

Together with the boys, Vera took her seat in the rounded pumpkin !

Walltopia - great for kids like Xav who loves rock climbing ! Ever since his first rock climbing experience at The Rock School, he has been looking forward for more !

He went on further and this time, to conquer the Tree House !

Swiftly, as he made his way up, I couldn't chase after him at all as my jeans hindered my movement but Xav was just having an awesome time, swinging like Tarzen

and sliding down the slides.

There is another playground that can be linked from the Tree House.

The linking bridge to the Tree House

Imagining to be a fire fighter here !!

Posing among the leaves !

Take a seat on the toadstools right in front of the playground if you need to have a break !

He found more resting stools around in the form of acorns,

tree stump, which reminded him of a story "The Giving Tree" by  Shel Silverstein

You can find more benches under the shade of these huge flowers. I would feel that it would be perfect if they could install fans with cooling mists as well.

We moved on to the giant flower pot but uh-oh !

The flower pot's cracked ......

How cool was it that within the cracked pot, it's another playground ! He's duper happy when he could "stand" on me on this see through panel.

The interior of the  cracked flower pot contained so much fun !

Remember your wet gears too ! There is a water play area for the little ones as well !

After all the fun, be assured that there is a shower room on the same level for the kids and of course for mummies with babies, do check out their spacious Baby Room, with three or four nursing rooms and changing station available as well as a water dispensing machine for hot / cold water.

Nursing Room

So how did the concepts of retail shops in shopping malls come about ? Thanks to the Leasing Managers who planned right from the start to executing their plans ! Here's a short clip shared by Ms Cheryl, Leasing Manager of CapitaLand Mall Asia. Westgate was the project she took under her wing !

Thank you Cheryl & Esther for the fun !

Here's a short clip on Westgate Wonderland and Westgate Kids Club ! Enjoy !
Westgate is located at : 3 Gateway Drive s608532. Nearest MRT will be Jurong East.

Steamed Tofu with Minced Meat & Crabmeat

A rare Thursday afternoon whereby I can produce three dishes for lunch. Seriously rare because I hardly have time to cook when I have to watch Vera like a hawk to prevent her rom scratching her eczema affected arms.

I made a quick marketing, carrying Vera with me and found some frozen crabmeat sticks and a box of beancurd. Hence, I decided to cook steamed tofu with minced meat (Read on for method), steamed red grouper and fried onion omelette for lunch.

I sliced the box of tofu into half and cut into squares. Should anyone of you can provide me with a tip on how to remove the tofu from the box without breaking it. Mine was bad !

Anyway, I managed to get a few decent looking, square pieces.

I marinated the mince meat with cornflour and Knorr Chicken Powder and dash of sesame oil. I added the diced crabmeat stick and one egg white to the minced meat.

Top the beancurd squares with the mixture and add one wolfberry to it for a nicer presentation.

I drizzled some Black bean soy sauce paste over, steamed it for about 10 mins under high heat and served.

A quick fix in less than 15 mins for the busy mamas !

{Review + Giveaway + Promotion} Inflatable Baby Bathtub

Making each bath session enjoyable with a splash or two, without any bumps and knocks against the traditional red bathtub (I got mine during my wedding and yes, I have another one given by Mt Alvernia Hospital) is possible with the Inflatable Baby Bathtub from Tiny.Tots, suitable for newborn up to the age of One.

Vera is growing taller ! Her height has increased such that she is outgrowing the current bathtub  anytime ! Each time, she kicked and straightened her legs in the tub, I have to be mindful that the top of her head would not hit the tub plus, the tub is so slippery that I have to buy a anti-slip mat from IKEA.

The problem is solved when Tiny.Tots sent us an Inflatable Bathtub, ingeniously designed in Japan ! No hard knocks and no fear of having baby slipped and fall under the water ! The base of the tub in segments and protruded rounded part in the middle prevents baby from slipping forward. When your little bud grows and is able to sit up without support, you can choose not to inflate the rounded area and continue to use the tub as per norm.

The underside of the bathtub

Safety feature of the tub; simple fill water up to the MAX indicator.

See how Vera is making herself comfy ! Look mummy, you don't need to hold me ok, I'll just hold by the wall of the tub ! The inflatable bathtub comes with a headrest too ! Just lean back. =)

when you are done with it, simply just hang it up using a wall hook through the opening found at the base of the bathtub.

Still thinking of what to grab for your friend's baby shower, this would make a special baby shower gift or if you would want to add into your diaper cake ! Or should you be finding something light weight enough to bring for your overseas trip and say goodbye to knocks, replace this for home use !! After you have decided not to use it anymore, just deflate and keep it in the storeroom.

Time for a CNY Giveaway by Tiny.tots ! Check out the details below.

Check out what's for Xavvy-licious' readers !

Zhenjie Yu Sheng (The Best in Chinatown)

The power of Facebook at times allow me to see where nice food can be found when anyone of my friends posted. During this festive season, of course a simple picture of the stall that sells this Yu Sheng coupled with a caption saying that it's the best Yu Sheng you can find in Chinatown.

After I saw the picture, I was talking to another friend and she told me her mum always buy from this famous stall !

The very evening, I made my way with dear and the kids to pack this home of course ! If you are a Yu Sheng Lover like me. You should try this. So far, apart from the Teochew Style Yu Sheng from Chin Lee Restaurant, this is the second one which made me craved for more ~ Zhenjie Yu Sheng

The Yu Sheng has got jellyfish in it. Not all stalls served this with Jellyfish I guess ? Correct me if am wrong. Overall, what made this stall stood out from the ones I have tried before. The sauce plays an important part to determine if the Yu Sheng will turn out nice. It's not overly sweet which don't make you feel irk after eating much. I love the deep fried flour crisps, it's thickness is just nice for the extra crunch  ! The radish and carrot are finely shredded as well !

A fast introduction to what's in Yu Sheng and their meaning.
- Carrot (红萝卜) is used as the first character 鸿 also sound like the Chinese character for red.Carrots are added to symbolize blessings of good luck, 鸿运当头 ( Hong Yun Dang Tou) meaning “Good luck is approaching”.
- The shredded green radish symbolizes eternal youth. 青春常驻, (Qing Chun Chang Zhu) meaning “Forever young”.
- The shredded white radish symbolizes prosperity in business and promotion at work, 风生水起 (Feng Sheng Shui Qi) meaning “Progress at a fast pace” and 步步高升, ( Bu Bu Gao Sheng); “Reaching higher level with each step”
- Fish, symbolizes abundance and excess through the year, 年年有余  (Nian Nian You Yu)
- Pomelo is added symbolizes Good Luck and Smooth Sailing, 大吉大利 (Da Ji Da Li)

Condiments like:
- peanuts crumbs symbolizes a household filled with gold and silver, 金银满屋 (Jin Yin Man Wu)
- Sesame seeds symbolizes a flourishing business, 生意兴隆 (Sheng Yi Xing Long )
- Pepper is then dashed over in the hope of attracting more money and valuables, 招财进宝  (Zhao Cai Jin Bao)
- Oil is poured over, circling the ingredients, symbolizing money to flow in from all directions. 一本万利, (Yi Ben Wan Li) meaning “Make 10,000 times of profit with your capital”  and 财源广进 (Cai Yuan Guang Jin) meaning “Numerous sources of wealth”
 - The Yu Sheng sauce, which is usually plum sauce,  symbolizes 甜甜蜜蜜 (Tian Tian Mi Mi) Meaning “May life always be sweet”, will be drizzled over the entire plate.

Zhenjie Yu Sheng does delivery too. Check out their criteria to meet for delivery and to note, no this is not a sponsored/ review post. Just sharing with Yu Sheng Lovers that there is the existence of this stall for a nice Yu Sheng which can make you go back for more !

The 52 Weeks Money Challenge !

This is for Stay-At-Home-Mums (like myself) / Dads with no income but probably surviving on the leftover change from grocery shopping or if you belong to the group drawing a full pay but each month you tend to spend it all, without managing to save any money or if you have a habit to save monthly and don't mind saving more and be $1378 richer by the end of 2014. Try this 52 weeks Money Challenge ! Was inspired by the post from Rachel on her facebook wall and Dinomama has a link for you to print out the sheet she has created.

I printed out and laminated it so that the paper can last. It goes like 1st week you put in $1, 2nd week you put in $2 and it goes on...... This week is Week 5, so I put $5 into the ziplock bag and strike off the date. Till date, this is week 5, I have accumulated $15 and it will go on till Week 52.

If you think you have more to spare, why not make a copy for your spouse as well and get your child started !

Festive Preps, Books and Craft to welcome the the year of Horsay and how "Pantang" are you ?

Chinese New Year, 新 年 (xin nian) which is known as Spring Festival 春节 (chun jie) consists of  a period of celebrations over a period of fifteen days, starting from the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar.

A Legend in ancient China, "Nian" (年) a man-eating predatory beast from the mountains, could infiltrate houses silently. The Chinese were always very scared of this monster and soon they learnt that Nian was sensitive to loud noises and the colour red, and so they scared it away with fireworks and using of the color red on their doors. "Guo Nian" actually means "Passover the Nian". These customs led to the first New Year celebrations. The first week is the most important and most often celebrated with visits to friends and family. This is a time to wish each other a blessed new year.

I bought these two books for Xav to read on the legend of Chinese New Year. << 春节 >> is a story about how the villagers keep "Nian" away using Red Colour and loud noises like fire crackers and lion dance. Do note that there is no Han Yu Pin Yin for the story below, you may want to read through with the kids  together.

"Come to the party" is a book that consists of the various festivals celebrated by the Chinese. The contents includes festivals like; Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, Hungry Ghost Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival.

ISBN 981-229-417-1

This year I did not really have much time to do any baking nor shop for any CNY decorations. I did not put up Spring Couplets 對 聯 (dui lian) this year but rather together with Xav, we made two Pinkie Pie from #My Little Ponies and sticked them on our door to welcome the year of Horse ! You can get the template from www.learncreatelove.com

and made a lantern which I have posted few weeks back on using 60  pieces of 3" squares to do it.

On and off, I have been spring cleaning different parts of the house. One thing to do when you spring clean, it will be good not to have the children around. Otherwise, what you have decided to discard, they will come to you and tell you that they need and would still want to keep them !  The belief of spring cleaning is that it will get rid of bad luck and get ready to receive good fortune.

Personally for my own belief, decluttering of unwanted stuff in the house, will apparently make the flow of the qi in the house smoother and somehow this works on me. I feel less frustrated seeing things all over the house.

Coming to food, there are several foods serve to usher in happiness, wealth and good fortune. My mum always like to cook Braised mushrooms with black moss, pronounced (Fatt Choy) 髮菜 in Cantonese, is also featured in many dishes since its name sounds similar to "prosperity" 發財 ( Fatt Choy) and she never fails to get us the sticky rice cake which is also known as "Nian Gao" - 年糕  and stalk of Leek - 蒜  (suan), meaning calculating  (算)  Mandarin. It symbolizes wealth with never ending of monies to count.

I learnt to make a simple dessert "Red Bean Soup with a twist" using sticky rice cake. So if you decided not to go too much on fried and oily food. Try this.

Another popular dish among the old and young is "Yusheng" 魚 生 (yu sheng), a Chinese-style raw fish salad. It usually consists of strips of raw fish (most commonly salmon) mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments. "Yusheng" literally means "raw fish", which symbolizes abundance, prosperity and vitality.  Fish 魚 (yu) which is also the pronunciation for "surplus" 餘 (yu). Each of the ingredient in the dish have their own meaning. In Cantonese, they named it "Lo Hei", which means prosperity.

Mandarin Orange 柑 - the name of the fruit is phonetically similar to gold -- jin ju (金橘子) in Mandarin or kam (金) in Cantonese. We will normally give them in a pair to the eldery, coupled with an Ang Pow, blessing them with good health.

Reunion dinner is held on New Year’s Eve when members of the family, near and far, get together for celebration. The New Year's Eve dinner is very elaborate with a traditional menu.
Common dishes such as :

This year, we went for our Reunion lunch with my family at #Grand Park Orchard, Open House Restaurant, located at 270 Orchard Road, Hotline : 66038855

My family

The kids' favourite - Yu Sheng (鱼生)!! LOU AH !!!

Reunion dinner with my in-laws was at Teo Chew Restaurant "Chin Lee Restaurant (深利美食馆)", located at Blk 115 Bedok North Road #01-285 S(460115) Tel : 64495454

It's quite easy to locate as it is just further down the popular Bedok 85 Market. My brother in-law prebooked the table months back ! By the time we reached, the restaurant was fully packed !

The Chuas

I super heart the Teochew Style Yu Sheng. The ingredients are not as fanciful as the ones that are served in our local Tze Char Stalls. Very Simple with just the greens and shredded carrot. The fish slices they used are not salmon but white fish. We added our own sliced abalone.

Teochew Style Yu Sheng

On the eve of Chinese New Year, do you have the practice of giving your children 压岁钱 (ya sui qian) ? My in laws will have such practices for us and the grandchildren.

Vera with her 压岁钱

I read about the most common origin of this tradition "There once was a monster called Sui (祟) which would come on the night of New Year's Eve (Chuxi) and touch the forehead of sleeping children. Once touched, children would loss their intelligence. To avoid this, parents usually stayed up the whole night to watch out for Sui (守祟, or 守岁). One couple decided to keep their son awake by having him play with coins wrapped in red paper. However, both the parents and the boy eventually fell asleep, with the paper-wrapped coins beside the boy's pillow. At night, Sui came in looking for the boy. The parents woke up, but it was too late for them to stop Sui. As Sui got close to the boy, a light flashed from the paper wrapped coins, scaring Sui away.
The next day, the story was spread throughout the village, and people believed that having coins wrapped in red paper would keep Sui away. Therefore it became a tradition to put money by the pillows of children on New Year's Eve and the money is then called Ya Sui Qian 压岁钱 ".

The red envelops, known as 紅 包( Hong Bao ) are usually given to the unmarried and junior members in the family. I will normally prepare on CNY Eve.

Some of the superstitious NOT TO DO during Chinese New Year, if you do follow through. Only the last two points applied to me. Am pretty open to the rest.

1. To buy books is bad luck, because book is a homonym for the word "lose" in Mandarin.
2. To buy a pair of shoes is considered bad luck. The word "shoes" is a homonym for the word "rough" in Cantonese.
3.  To buy a pair of pants is considered bad luck. The word "pants" is a homonym for the word "bitter" in Cantonese. (Although some perceive it to be positive as the word 'pants' in Cantonese could be a homonym for the word "wealth".)
4.  To have a hair-cut is considered bad luck. The word "hair" is a homonym for the word "prosperity". Thus "cutting hair" could be perceived as "cutting your prosperity" in Cantonese.
5.  To sweep the floor is considered bad luck, as it will sweep away the good fortune for the new year.
6. To talk about death is also considered bad luck.

Are you that "Pantang" ? Tell me more if you have more to add on.

Do link up with me if you have any Chinese Fun post ! Grab my button code on the left of my blog.
