In a very warm and relax settings, laid the beds with soothing music in the background.

Learning chinese characters made easy !

I found this book when I visited Library @ Chinatown and thought it's a good reference for parents who want to start teaching the kiddos simple chinese characters. I felt that it made the learning of chinese characters easier.

Below is one of the pages in the book. It actually explains how the character is derived from the object itself.

解画
It includes 笔画数目 (number of strokes), 书写笔順 (strokes sequencing), 记字口决 (A riddle to help remembering the character more easily), 造句 (Making sentences), 组词, 词语搭配 (how to use the character in a sentence) etc

The characters comes with a Han Yu Pin Yin on the top left corner as well.

Do look out for this book if you are in the library !

Growing clear crystals - Big Bag of Science

What's up for this coming school holidays ? We bought this Big bag of Science to have some fun time doing simple experiments in the evenings. This kit can do more than 50 fun experiments ! We loved it !

The equipment and materials in the package
We did our first experiment two days ago - Growing clear crystals.

A scoop, superabsorbent crystals and a cup
I got Xav to put in one scoop of superabsorbent crystals in the cup.

Before I add in the water, I got him to feel the texture of the beads.

I assisted him to write down his findings based on what he observed and touched. I believed that learning is more complete if the child gets his/her sensory touch involved and had fun discovering and observing.

His findings
So what is about this growing crystals ? (From the activity sheet)

The scientific name for Superabsorbent crystals is cross-linked polyacrylamide copolymer gel, or a superabsorbent polymer in short. If you look at the polymer with a microscope, you will discover it is actually simply a long chain of molecules that absorb water

The superabsorbent crystals are safe to touch and squeeze through your fingers. Since they absorbed water, it may caused problem with the plumbing system. Hence, it's good to discard them properly in a bag.

Our beautiful, colourful crystals which have expanded after several hours. We gonna keep this and perhaps plant something with it !

Bubbles Gymnastics @ The Grandstand

For this June holidays, if you are planning some activities for your child, this is one of the schools you can check it out at The Grandstand.

Together with three other mommy bloggers, we were invited to a morning of Kids'Day Out @ The Grandstand over the weekend. The whole morning was filled with fun activities for the kids.

Our first stop to kickstart the day was a session @ Bubbles Gymnastics (Formerly known as Sky Gym).

The brightly lited Bubbles Gym

The instructors started the class with a mass warm up.

After the warming up, the children proceeded to the station where they did Backward Roll.

Samantha said that this is something that not all children will be willing to perform as it is a really different feel altogether. She is happy that the group of students under her, have the confidence to perform it. I'm glad to see that Xav is willing to give a try. Here is a short clip on it :

Why gymnastics and what are it's benefits :

Gymnastics is not solely about producing gymnasts. It is a lifestyle exercise program for children - building strength, flexibility, speed, balance, coordination, power, discipline and resilience which are important and essential skills for life.
Balancing on the "snake"
1. Self confidence : As each step they take, it helps them to gain confidence in themselves which will benefit them in their school life as well as life as a whole.

Here's a clip on an attempt of doing a handstand with the help of the barrel (if there is a correct term for it) and how he wayang as he attempted to climb out.

2. Social skills : Children learn through learning to listen to instructions, being quiet, taking turns and respecting other etc.

3. Discipline : The classes are conducted in a controlled environment. Discipline will be instilled in the children as well as learning self control which is strongly emphasised by the coaches.

4. Coordination : Gymnastics help to develop better coordination and motor skills.

5. Flexibility : Gymnastics help to build overall flexibility and help prevent injuries be it in whichever kind of sport the child is taking on.

6. Determination and Focus : Some gymnastics skills are hard to master, hence from here, children learn determination and focus in continuing to work hard to master the skill. This resilience is something essential for life and is important to have. It helps to stimulate neurological pathways and promote reading readiness, longer attention span, enhaced problem solving skills as well as communication skills in children.

7. Over coming fears : To face a challenge with a little fear and then to successfully accomplish it, is a wonderful motivator and confidence builder for all children and this can be provided in gymnastics.

8. Fitness and strength : Gymnastics classes are activities-packed, moving and lifting their own body weights build overall body strength and this fitness can help reduce the developing of asthmatic condition during adolescence.

There are a range of classes catering to the different age group :
Gymtots
Kindergym (3-6 years old)
Recreation (5 years & above)
Junior Trampoline ( 3-6 years)
Trampoline (6 years & above)

Not only they provide classes, if you want your child to experience an extraordinary birthday party. Do email : info@bubblesgym.com.sg to find out more.

This is definately something new for Xav and yes, he enjoyed the session thoroughly under the coaching of the friendly Instructor, Ms Samantha. Thank you Bubbles Gym for having us.

[ Ceased Operation] Treehouse Cafe @ The Grandstand

We an invitation from OpenRice Singapore for a food tasting session @ Treehouse Cafe after a morning of Kids' Day out @ The Grandstand, visiting some places specially catering to services just for children.

This family first concept restaurant, newly opened in Feb 2013, is located on the first floor, has a diaper changing/ nursing room within the restaurant for the comfort of mummies and the young ones.

We stepped into the cosy cafe, lighted with warm lightings.

The Treehouse compromises of two levels, first level would be the dining area as well as a section where child friendly tables and chairs were available as well for the kids to utilise. You can leave the kids to  play on their own, with some lego bricks, bead chaser, books and some other small toys.

There is a also a selection of some magazines as well for children and adults to browse through.

Leading to the second level,

Staircase leading to the "Treehouse"
it has a kitchen set for the kids to let their imagination run wild and pretend play. Other than that, I personally feel that there is not much toys on the second floor. Perhaps they would want to consider brightening up the second level and add on a wall fan for a better ventilated play area and add on more toys to better utilise the big space.

Xav's helping himself to the kitchen set
Would advise that parents' accompany are required for young children if they were to be playing on the second floor. Other than that, the play area on level one is ideal for the kids to play on their own while the adults dined.

Check out their children's activities held every on every sunday, foc for the patrons :
1st, 3rd & 5th sunday of the month : 11.30am - 2.30 pm (Art & Crafts activities conducted by Artz Graine)
2nd & 4th sunday of the month : 12.30pm - 2.30 pm (Face & hand painting cum balloon sculpting conducted by Mr Bottle Kids' Party )

On the menu of Treehouse Cafe, they serve a fare of European to Asian favourites. For breakfast menu, it is available up to 11.30 am.

Eggs Benedict ($18)
Eggs Benedict with poached eggs and smoked salmon ($14)

Eggs Benedict with Jamon ($18)
Check out the few Tapas dishes below. If you are a meat lover, you might love this. The sauce is just nice for my palate. By the way, I'm not a meat lover as most pork dishes have a pretty strong "pork smell" even after they cooked it. However, I can accept this dish. As I took the first bite, I did not have any issue except for to find the meat a little too dry. The sauce is good and it will taste even better if the meat is more moist.

Meatballs in spicy tomato sauce ($12)

Prawns served in sizzling sauce of esqelette pepper, garlic and olive oil ($14)
Want to spice up your palate ? Try this sauteed mushrooms. Some may find it too spicy but I take it pretty well. It's not too oily to snack on it.

Sauteed spicy mushrooms with garlic and chilli ($8)
This is yet another one of the dishes which won me over ! Cheesy and a little tangy.
Beef Lasagna ($18)
Their main courses offers the following :

Rosemary Chicken
Apart from the black pepper lamb steak I took at UK Argo Farm, this is a rare occasion which I am willing to taste. I would have to say that this is really good ! The meat is soft and tender and the best part is the meat does not have any strong smell.

Braised Lamb Shank ($26)

Gourmet Burger ($20)

Curry Chicken ($14) - served with rice or baguette
Coming to the desserts, it's a must try for their Chocolate Laval Cake ! Served warm and moist, coupled with a scoop of Movenpick Vanilla Ice-cream. And it is not overly sweet.

Chocolate Laval Cake ($10)

Gourmet Tiramisu ($10)
Kids' meals are available too for kids below age of 12 @ $15 per set which includes a main meal + drink + a scoop of Movenpick ice-cream. Portion is slightly big for Xav though.

"Dear Alfie" is pasta with chicken ham & onion cream suace. Just nice for my lil' onion lover here.

Xav enjoying his serving of Dear Alfie
Xav's having the best of both world - watching cartoon and having his sweet treat !
Treehouse cafe does have party packages available too ! Check out their Treehouse Cafe FB page for pics.

Children's Party Package
Party Menu
My overall review on Treehouse Cafe :

- Indeed a family concept kind of restaurant, where highchairs and children cutlery are easily available. Even  families with young babies are good to dine there with the facility of a diaper changing/ nursing room available.
- Parents can dine in peace with the availability of free entertainment for the children.
- Decent fare available but being a dessert lover, I will come back for the desserts if I'm in the area.

Thank you OpenRice &Treehouse Cafe for having us.

Bun @ 29 weeks 3 Days

A quick and short post for a Monday as I have 2 hours to spare while waiting to have my blood samples drawn for the second time for the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT).

Bump @ 29 weeks
Today am in my 29 weeks and 3 days. BB is weighing at 1.5kg (average weight) while I have gained 15kg so far, hitting 60kg.

I wish the current weight can be maintained even after delivery but of cos with even distribution to the correct places.  =p
Scan of the abdomen to measure bb's weight

No issues so far except for the waking up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep plus the nightly cramps on my calves and worse a very weird area, my ankle ! The cramps kept coming back till I was tearing away...

What calls for the OGTT test was my gynea showed a cause for concern for my weight surged during the last two months. I gained near to 10kg. Diabetes was the concern on his mind.
I have been fasting since last evening from 8pm onwards as OGTT requires us to fast for at least 10-16 hours before hand.

The first blood sample will be drawn and tested to give a baseline reading. I was then given a bottle of glucola after that to be consumed within 5 mins. Of course I was happy to see the orange coloured drink but never did occurred to me that it was so sweet that it seriously sucks a big time ! I felt so like puking after taking it.

I was told to wait for two hours to have another round of urine test and blood samples drawn again. And yes, was reminded to remain seated and not to walk around. And if I should throw up after the drink, I will have to retake the test again !!

Finally,  the long wait of two hours is ending in 10 mins time which meant break-fast soon !!!
