Zhenjie Yu Sheng (The Best in Chinatown)

The power of Facebook at times allow me to see where nice food can be found when anyone of my friends posted. During this festive season, of course a simple picture of the stall that sells this Yu Sheng coupled with a caption saying that it's the best Yu Sheng you can find in Chinatown.

After I saw the picture, I was talking to another friend and she told me her mum always buy from this famous stall !

The very evening, I made my way with dear and the kids to pack this home of course ! If you are a Yu Sheng Lover like me. You should try this. So far, apart from the Teochew Style Yu Sheng from Chin Lee Restaurant, this is the second one which made me craved for more ~ Zhenjie Yu Sheng

The Yu Sheng has got jellyfish in it. Not all stalls served this with Jellyfish I guess ? Correct me if am wrong. Overall, what made this stall stood out from the ones I have tried before. The sauce plays an important part to determine if the Yu Sheng will turn out nice. It's not overly sweet which don't make you feel irk after eating much. I love the deep fried flour crisps, it's thickness is just nice for the extra crunch  ! The radish and carrot are finely shredded as well !

A fast introduction to what's in Yu Sheng and their meaning.
- Carrot (红萝卜) is used as the first character 鸿 also sound like the Chinese character for red.Carrots are added to symbolize blessings of good luck, 鸿运当头 ( Hong Yun Dang Tou) meaning “Good luck is approaching”.
- The shredded green radish symbolizes eternal youth. 青春常驻, (Qing Chun Chang Zhu) meaning “Forever young”.
- The shredded white radish symbolizes prosperity in business and promotion at work, 风生水起 (Feng Sheng Shui Qi) meaning “Progress at a fast pace” and 步步高升, ( Bu Bu Gao Sheng); “Reaching higher level with each step”
- Fish, symbolizes abundance and excess through the year, 年年有余  (Nian Nian You Yu)
- Pomelo is added symbolizes Good Luck and Smooth Sailing, 大吉大利 (Da Ji Da Li)

Condiments like:
- peanuts crumbs symbolizes a household filled with gold and silver, 金银满屋 (Jin Yin Man Wu)
- Sesame seeds symbolizes a flourishing business, 生意兴隆 (Sheng Yi Xing Long )
- Pepper is then dashed over in the hope of attracting more money and valuables, 招财进宝  (Zhao Cai Jin Bao)
- Oil is poured over, circling the ingredients, symbolizing money to flow in from all directions. 一本万利, (Yi Ben Wan Li) meaning “Make 10,000 times of profit with your capital”  and 财源广进 (Cai Yuan Guang Jin) meaning “Numerous sources of wealth”
 - The Yu Sheng sauce, which is usually plum sauce,  symbolizes 甜甜蜜蜜 (Tian Tian Mi Mi) Meaning “May life always be sweet”, will be drizzled over the entire plate.

Zhenjie Yu Sheng does delivery too. Check out their criteria to meet for delivery and to note, no this is not a sponsored/ review post. Just sharing with Yu Sheng Lovers that there is the existence of this stall for a nice Yu Sheng which can make you go back for more !

The 52 Weeks Money Challenge !

This is for Stay-At-Home-Mums (like myself) / Dads with no income but probably surviving on the leftover change from grocery shopping or if you belong to the group drawing a full pay but each month you tend to spend it all, without managing to save any money or if you have a habit to save monthly and don't mind saving more and be $1378 richer by the end of 2014. Try this 52 weeks Money Challenge ! Was inspired by the post from Rachel on her facebook wall and Dinomama has a link for you to print out the sheet she has created.

I printed out and laminated it so that the paper can last. It goes like 1st week you put in $1, 2nd week you put in $2 and it goes on...... This week is Week 5, so I put $5 into the ziplock bag and strike off the date. Till date, this is week 5, I have accumulated $15 and it will go on till Week 52.

If you think you have more to spare, why not make a copy for your spouse as well and get your child started !

Festive Preps, Books and Craft to welcome the the year of Horsay and how "Pantang" are you ?

Chinese New Year, 新 年 (xin nian) which is known as Spring Festival 春节 (chun jie) consists of  a period of celebrations over a period of fifteen days, starting from the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar.

A Legend in ancient China, "Nian" (年) a man-eating predatory beast from the mountains, could infiltrate houses silently. The Chinese were always very scared of this monster and soon they learnt that Nian was sensitive to loud noises and the colour red, and so they scared it away with fireworks and using of the color red on their doors. "Guo Nian" actually means "Passover the Nian". These customs led to the first New Year celebrations. The first week is the most important and most often celebrated with visits to friends and family. This is a time to wish each other a blessed new year.

I bought these two books for Xav to read on the legend of Chinese New Year. << 春节 >> is a story about how the villagers keep "Nian" away using Red Colour and loud noises like fire crackers and lion dance. Do note that there is no Han Yu Pin Yin for the story below, you may want to read through with the kids  together.

This year I did not really have much time to do any baking nor shop for any CNY decorations. I did not put up Spring Couplets 對 聯 (dui lian) this year but rather together with Xav, we made two Pinkie Pie from #My Little Ponies and sticked them on our door to welcome the year of Horse ! You can get the template from www.learncreatelove.com

and made a lantern which I have posted few weeks back on using 60  pieces of 3" squares to do it.

On and off, I have been spring cleaning different parts of the house. One thing to do when you spring clean, it will be good not to have the children around. Otherwise, what you have decided to discard, they will come to you and tell you that they need and would still want to keep them !  The belief of spring cleaning is that it will get rid of bad luck and get ready to receive good fortune.

Personally for my own belief, decluttering of unwanted stuff in the house, will apparently make the flow of the qi in the house smoother and somehow this works on me. I feel less frustrated seeing things all over the house.

Coming to food, there are several foods serve to usher in happiness, wealth and good fortune. My mum always like to cook Braised mushrooms with black moss, pronounced (Fatt Choy) 髮菜 in Cantonese, is also featured in many dishes since its name sounds similar to "prosperity" 發財 ( Fatt Choy) and she never fails to get us the sticky rice cake which is also known as "Nian Gao" - 年糕  and stalk of Leek - 蒜  (suan), meaning calculating  (算)  Mandarin. It symbolizes wealth with never ending of monies to count.

I learnt to make a simple dessert "Red Bean Soup with a twist" using sticky rice cake. So if you decided not to go too much on fried and oily food. Try this.

Another popular dish among the old and young is "Yusheng" 魚 生 (yu sheng), a Chinese-style raw fish salad. It usually consists of strips of raw fish (most commonly salmon) mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments. "Yusheng" literally means "raw fish", which symbolizes abundance, prosperity and vitality.  Fish 魚 (yu) which is also the pronunciation for "surplus" 餘 (yu). Each of the ingredient in the dish have their own meaning. In Cantonese, they named it "Lo Hei", which means prosperity.

Mandarin Orange 柑 - the name of the fruit is phonetically similar to gold -- jin ju (金橘子) in Mandarin or kam (金) in Cantonese. We will normally give them in a pair to the eldery, coupled with an Ang Pow, blessing them with good health.

Reunion dinner is held on New Year’s Eve when members of the family, near and far, get together for celebration. The New Year's Eve dinner is very elaborate with a traditional menu.
Common dishes such as :

This year, we went for our Reunion lunch with my family at #Grand Park Orchard, Open House Restaurant, located at 270 Orchard Road, Hotline : 66038855

My family

The kids' favourite - Yu Sheng (鱼生)!! LOU AH !!!

Reunion dinner with my in-laws was at Teo Chew Restaurant "Chin Lee Restaurant (深利美食馆)", located at Blk 115 Bedok North Road #01-285 S(460115) Tel : 64495454

It's quite easy to locate as it is just further down the popular Bedok 85 Market. My brother in-law prebooked the table months back ! By the time we reached, the restaurant was fully packed !

The Chuas

I super heart the Teochew Style Yu Sheng. The ingredients are not as fanciful as the ones that are served in our local Tze Char Stalls. Very Simple with just the greens and shredded carrot. The fish slices they used are not salmon but white fish. We added our own sliced abalone.

Teochew Style Yu Sheng

On the eve of Chinese New Year, do you have the practice of giving your children 压岁钱 (ya sui qian) ? My in laws will have such practices for us and the grandchildren.

Vera with her 压岁钱

I read about the most common origin of this tradition "There once was a monster called Sui (祟) which would come on the night of New Year's Eve (Chuxi) and touch the forehead of sleeping children. Once touched, children would loss their intelligence. To avoid this, parents usually stayed up the whole night to watch out for Sui (守祟, or 守岁). One couple decided to keep their son awake by having him play with coins wrapped in red paper. However, both the parents and the boy eventually fell asleep, with the paper-wrapped coins beside the boy's pillow. At night, Sui came in looking for the boy. The parents woke up, but it was too late for them to stop Sui. As Sui got close to the boy, a light flashed from the paper wrapped coins, scaring Sui away.
The next day, the story was spread throughout the village, and people believed that having coins wrapped in red paper would keep Sui away. Therefore it became a tradition to put money by the pillows of children on New Year's Eve and the money is then called Ya Sui Qian 压岁钱 ".

The red envelops, known as 紅 包( Hong Bao ) are usually given to the unmarried and junior members in the family. I will normally prepare on CNY Eve.

Some of the superstitious NOT TO DO during Chinese New Year, if you do follow through. Only the last two points applied to me. Am pretty open to the rest.

1. To buy books is bad luck, because book is a homonym for the word "lose" in Mandarin.
2. To buy a pair of shoes is considered bad luck. The word "shoes" is a homonym for the word "rough" in Cantonese.
3.  To buy a pair of pants is considered bad luck. The word "pants" is a homonym for the word "bitter" in Cantonese. (Although some perceive it to be positive as the word 'pants' in Cantonese could be a homonym for the word "wealth".)
4.  To have a hair-cut is considered bad luck. The word "hair" is a homonym for the word "prosperity". Thus "cutting hair" could be perceived as "cutting your prosperity" in Cantonese.
5.  To sweep the floor is considered bad luck, as it will sweep away the good fortune for the new year.
6. To talk about death is also considered bad luck.

Are you that "Pantang" ? Tell me more if you have more to add on.

Mummy, WELL DONE !

It's just a few evenings ago, I was done with my dinner and Xav suddenly told me "Mummy, well done !! I shall give you a reward ok ?" I was stunned for a minute, thinking at the back of my mind, why the sudden praise by my pre-schooler ? He's watching me !!??

Then I replied Xav "Oh thank you ! But, what did mummy do to earn the reward" ? Xav replied, "Mummy, you know, you were good because you did not use your mobile phone or the laptop during your dinner. That's why I want to reward you"

Feeling happy and guilty at the same time after Xav gave me the  praise. I do have to admit the mobile phone is on my hands most of the time when I'm not carrying the baby. What's keeping me so occupied ? Mainly my Watsapp group chats and reading the Facebook updates. Sometimes, I do surf and google for home learning ideas while sometimes I'm busy sorting through the photos taken with my mobile phone to see which one can be deleted as the memory of the mobile phone is reaching it's max.

No, I hardly play games , so do not bother to send me game request. So if you happened to be reading this post, you will know why I did not respond to your request. I do not load movies too.

Those of you who are in the group chats with me, recently, if you realised, I have been slow in replying my messages, this is why. I am trying to cut down the usage of the mobile phone so that I can spend more quality time with Xav and the family.

One of my resolution for this year is to start exercising ! On the Saturday late afternoon, we decided to jog to Sengkang Swimming Pool from our place Fernvale.

Seriously, he was more than happy that I could join him ! Few days ago, I promised him that I will jog with him when there is a chance to do so.

My motivation and my pacer

We took a slow walk back after dinner and the next round was climbing up the stairs again.

This time round, I guess my stamina was better. Instead of panting at level 6. Now I could hold to Level 10 instead.

As per last round, Xav beat me again ! He reached the 20th floor first and I was this time round, 4 levels behind him.

Nice, quality time spent together with Xav as we motivated and encouraged each other along the journey. Am looking forward to have more of such sessions with him.

Daddies and mummies, do try spending more quality time with your children and partner by just putting away the phone. Am sure they will appreciate it.

Tott - Bake & Go !

{Backlog}

Baking is not new to Xav as have always roped him in with me baking in the kitchen. Until I have decided not to engage a helper anymore and the arrival of Vera, I find it a dread to wash up after baking ! But ... I will still try simply because Xav says so ! He had once told me he missed baking with me in the kitchen. The idea of baking with his friends came just in time ! We spent the morning of new year's eve at with his little friends at TOTT.

Love the idea of Bake & Go ! No washing up sounds YAY  !!?  Each child is given a tray, a tin of dough, some cutters and a cutting mat to work on at their workstations.

Bake & Go !

A quick group snap before they get their hands busy with the dough.

The little ones started working on their frozen dough. I do not know if it's just me ? At least a pair of glove, an apron or a hat for hygiene should be observed ? Are the staff supposed to provide us with a pair each or should we self service and help ourselves to it ? The kids would not be bothered anyway, only the mums probably.

Mummy...  the dough is so hard !

The six of them were busy exchanging cutters through out, while having some small talks and sang among themselves !

All ready to go into the oven !

While waiting for the cookies to be ready from the oven, we went for lunch at the café. There is a mini playroom located just next to the café too. Parents can dine in peace while kids play !

Delightful little ones after the baking session

Mums with little babies to note. There is a nursing room just next to the washrooms at Level 1. It will be locked up so what you need to do is to proceed to the Customer Service Counter and request for the key.

A cosy nursing room lies within the premises.

With a full length opaque blind which serves as a "door" of the  cubicle.

Do remember to ask for the air-con remote control ! I did not realise it was not in the room by itself before the staff left. End up, I was fanning Vera through out the whole feeding session.

Tott, host private parties too ! Good for a baking party if you do not want to host it at home ! Recently, Cherieladie blogged about attending a party there. We actually called and book for a private session. Each child is $14.50 for a session.

Not too bad for a place where you can SHOP, DINE, PLAY,  BAKE & GO and I love it because there is a NURSING ROOM !

TOTT is located at :
896 Dunearn Road, Singapore 589472
Hotline : +65 6219 7077

DIY your own Minions Stationery Holder ! Beeeee Doh ! Beeeee Doh ! Activity for "SCHOOL OUT"- Day 17

{Backlog} If you happen to come to my place and see some empty toilet roll holders, no, please don't think I'm a hoarder. They come in handy when situations like a sudden request from the kiddo to make some craft out of it  arises.

During the last school holidays, we went to Suntec City, where the Minions Meet & Greet was held. Xav wanted to queue up for the Minions Pencil Holder Craft session. But at the same time, it was near to  Vera's feeding time. By the time, we queued and started crafting, am sure I will definitely end up having a cranky and crying baby.

So here's my promise to Xav that I will make the holders with him at home.

Materials that you'll need:
- Washi Tapes (Blue, Black &Yellow)
- Empty Toilet Roll Holders
- Black Marker
- Scissors
-  1/2 Inch and 1 inch circle puncher
- Black and white cardstocks
- Glue

Step 1 : Xav taped the entire toilet roll holder in yellow.

I assisted him to tape a letter "I" to form the jumper of the minions as shown below.

Step 2: Using the circle punchers, punched out 5 pieces of 1 inch black and white circles and 5 pieces of 1/2 inch circles.

I trimmed the white circles to a slightly smaller circles but bigger than  1/2 inch
circles.

For the eyes

Step 3 : Stick the 1/2 inch black circle onto the 1 inch (slightly smaller white circle) then  onto the 1 inch black circle. Then, the whole layered circle onto the toilet roll holder.

Step 4 : Cut out a strip of black washi tape and stick it as the frames. Using a marker, Xav drew on the expressions for the Minions !

Step 5 : Cut out three sqaures from the cardstock and stick at the base of the holders. Here we present
our Minions Stationery Holders !

Bee-doh 1 Bee-doh !

There are more ideas HERE on how we use washi tapes for crafts !

Step By Step Guide in making a Lantern out of Squares !

By now, you would have seen Chinese New Year decorations being put up everywhere ! I remembered during my primary school days, during  this time of the year, we will be asked to make a lantern and bring it to the class for decorations. The project would be normally done by my mum, using a stack of poker cards, ang pow and some beards.

I was drawn to the lantern at the window display of  "K"rafer's Paradise, the Scrapbooking Store located at CitySquare Mall, which I normally drops by every Wednesday when Xav went for his class.

This year is special ! We made a lantern together ! Together with the old (my mum) and young (Xav). It's really a rare yet precious moment.

Gigi, then taught us how to construct the lantern and here we go ! It's pretty easy ! All you need is 60 pieces of 3" squares. Here's the step by step guide !

Tools and materials needed :
1. Score board (Optional, you can use ruler to draw lines and make your own marking if you do not have a scoring board.
2. Pattern papers (I used Teresa Collin's Spring Collection)
3. Scotch Tape
4. Glue Dots
5. One accessory to place at the bottom of the lantern. (I bought mine at NTUC for $1 each)
6. Paper Trimmer
7. Ribbon

Step One : Score the measurement of 3" on the pattern paper

Score the lines

Spot the score lines ?

Step Two : Cut along the score lines

Step Three : Choose one side of the square and stick the scotch tape along the side as shown.

Step Four: Fold up the adjacent side if the square and stick the sides together.

You'll get a "cone" after sticking the sides together.

Step Five : Make a "flower" with  five of the cones by sticking them side by side.

The flower

Helicopter View of the underside

To make a full lantern, you need 12 pieces of the flower.

Step Six: Assemble half of the lantern using 6 pieces (It will somehow turn into a semi circle)

I cut out the pink flowers in three sizes to layer them on top of each other. Xav helped me to stick thr pink flowers together and yes, he is pretty good with it !

Step Seven: I did not managed to find any pink glitter paper. Hence, the bottles of sticklers came into good use ! I gave the plain pink flowers a coat of glitter.

Step Eight: I looped a long ribbon into the accessory. Make sure it is long enough for you to hang up. You can cut away the excess later.

Step Nine : Stick a little piece of scotch tape  on the string of the accessory to the middle after you have positioned it in the  middle.

Step Ten : Take another half of the "semi circle" and assemble with the other half and you are done !

If you are lazy to cut, you can purchase the raw materials (60 pcs of 3" squares + 12 glitter flowers + ribbon + one accessory ) from D'Sail Creation. Do note that design may varies, depending on availability of the pattern paper.

If you have other ideas to DIY your own CNY deco,  do leave me your link in the comment  box !
