Having nurtured Xav to be an independent reader at a young age, I am looking forward to start the habit of reading to Vera too ! It's never too young to read !
Between 4-5 months old, I started reading to Vera using board books with colourful illustrations and if possible I got books that allowed her to involve her sense of touch. I allowed her to have a feel of turning the pages. But of course, everything that is within her reach, will then be going into her mouth. Hence, during that moment, I have to remove the book away from her.
Each time I went through a book with her. Her pair of little eyes would be all over the page, looking curiously at the pictures. I'm surprised that when she was cranky, I will call out to her to get her attention and asked her if she would want the flashcards. Btw, I'm using the flashcards from "Your baby can read"
Instantly, she will keep quiet and her eyes set on the stack of flashcards am holding on to. I will then run through the stack say about three to four times until I have to stop because my arms are sore from holding the stack above her. Sometimes, the very nice gorgor would flash to her on my behalf.
Here's to share some Natural Literacy Activities I learnt while attending the parenting workshop with Mindchamps, which Xav has been with them for the past coming to three years.
1. Read to the child everyday. I have been doing this when Xav was young. It has become a habit before bedtime until this past one year, I have not been constantly doing due to the tiring pregnancy journey when I was expecting Vera and after the arrival of Vera. But am glad he still loves to read by himself whenever I do not have time for him.
2. Library is FREE for all ! Make it a regular trip with your child if you can ! One of Xav's favourite place to visit !
3. Stick some magnetic letters on your fridge or on the door of your storeroom. This encourages the child to spontaneously manipulate letters and starting to form words. I am utilising the door at my storeroom. The perfect place !
4. Engage in activities that require and involves reading. For instance, reading of recipe when you are having some bonding moments in the kitchen or get your little one to read out what is on the To-buy list.
5. Make the home settings a "Literacy Rich" Environment. I have placed age appropriate reading materials at the reach of Xav. He can reach for the books himself at any point of time.
6. Playdates ! Something which the mummies and kids would love. Social interaction is encouraged here and the kids vocabulary will expand through their own negotiation and role play.
7. Play letter, sound and word games like Scrabble or Boogle Junior. Common words are exposed in a fun way, making learning more fun !
8. Engage in conversation with your child frequently. This does not only gives u a chance to hear your child out and bond with them. Through the conversations, the child's spoken vocabulary expands. Strong verbal skills are linked to strong reading skills.
9. Point out written language around you. Be it signboards, street signs, traffic signs, posters or advertisement on trains or bus stops, I will point out to Xav if I can. He too loves to read advertisement around him especially at the train stations. This connects the written word with useful and important information.
10. Ensure your child observes you reading. Be a strong role model to show your child that you value reading.
Do drop me a comment should you have more tips to share !

Vera @ 4 mois - Making her "BALD" Statement !
Vera was born with quite a lot of hair as compared to Xav. I have to say that I was very reluctant to shave her head ! These three months, for an unknown reason, she loves to pull her hair whenever she is in frustration ! Slowly, the sides of her head were balding from the pulling and plucking ! Until the area was bald, she then reached for the hair on top of her head. Now it's me who is starting to pull my own hair after seeing such a thing happening ! Was it only Vera or other does your babies do this too ?
One day before Vera turned 4 months old, we brought her to have her head shaved at #Huaxia Tai Mao Bi and made a baby hair brush using her hair.
Seriously, I have to say that it makes shampooing her head easier now and Vera is definitely happy with her own choice !
After a month ! Vera's hair started to grow ! How happy is she ! Growing up fast as she has just turned five months old !
Watch out for her new milestones !

Sage Formula Basic 500 Words
The beginning of a new year, new school term, I set my resolution to try to start teaching Xav more if time permits. This is the range of Sage Formula I bought sometime back and has completed going through the first book for reading only with Xav. I am trying to advance to something more than reading.
Sage Formula has a set of 25 books, 5 books each for each level (Beginning, Budding, Building, Confident & Fluent)
The set has 500 Chinese words which are commonly used and most are relevant to a child's day-to-day life.
Xav learns a new word from each lesson as he progressed. It comes with Hanyu Pinyin on top and as well as an English translation at the bottom of the character. The Hanyu Pinyin helps when it comes to words that parents can't read when teaching. Don't be surprise that there will be some words that are simple until we actually forget how to read them.
The words will then be repeated in subsequent lessons, working towards to build a solid foundation and understanding the use of the word.
As you go through each lesson, the sentences get longer. Personally, I find it good in giving the child an example of "Zao Ju"- forming sentences with a given word and "Pei Chi" as well.
Coming to the correct sequence of strokes. I love it as Sage Formula has the printed word in a pretty big size with the strokes numbered in sequence. I normally placed a transparency over it and Xav will use a washable marker to go through the strokes himself following the numbers.
I would use the books for reference as well when I, myself is not sure of some characters during the preparation of letting him practice writing. I teach him using the stroke sequencing method as per my last post, HERE.
So how to find out which book you have got ? The levels will be indicated by number 1 -5 as per the circled part on the left of the book.
Following by the circled button on the right, if you see only one small circle in it, it means Book 1. Book 2 will have 2 small circles and all the way till 5 small circles for Book 5.
ISBN number for this is 978-988-17005-0-6 if you wish to find it online. I normally will wait for Popular Fairs where they have 50% off for the second book.
Do link up if you have any Chinese Learning Resource to share !

Ending 2013 with a good note ! Welcome 2014 !!
One more day to welcome 2014 ! A new year, a new beginning as I have decided to forgo that peanuts yet not so little salary of mine and return as a Stay Stuck- At-Home-Mum. The beginning of no MCs, no leave, no holidays, no pay but will be rewarded with Vera's toothless smiles and being able to witness all her very first milestones. As for Xav, I'm glad I'm back with him again, making nice food & bentos for him as per his request.
Generally, 2013 has been smooth sailing, minus of the part when I was so depressed with my helper, during the nine months when I was pregnant.
The most major happening of the year was welcoming our new addition - Vera, into our family ! The greatest joy we could ever have !
Bid goodbye to my former team in IMH in December with a compensation back to the company under unforeseen circumstances, as Vera decided to go on bottle strike until since she was 2 months old until now that she is 5 months old !
But I knew my decision is worth it though yes, it's super, uber, tiring to me. (Deeply salute those who are looking after three or more kids), probably some of you out there can handle it better than me !
Days without a helper and no additional help, looking after the two kids by myself in the day, basic house chores like keeping the house tidy at least, seems so impossible these days ! I am trying hard to improve my efficiency. Count my blessings for having a supportive hubby. Yes, I'm not expressive and do not like to put these words on my mouth to tell him straight in the face. But am truly thankful to him for helping me out in the chores and kids whenever he can. In fact, he does the chores better than me.
Conclusion, we will try to make sure Xav takes on what his daddy is doing in helping mummy out (to be a good husband next time) and make sure Vera finds a husband who is like her daddy who takes care of her just like how I'm being taken care and loved for.
For blogging "achievement", I have finally created my first linky party on "Chinese Fun" every first week of the month to share the resources I used to teach Xav. Thanks to a fellow mom blogger who guided me in creating my own logo.
As well as created a Fans Page for Xavvy-licious on Facebook as well as learning how to use Instagram ! How exciting !!
I regained a friendship which was lost 2 years ago due to a don't know what happened misunderstanding. I'm really happy to have find back the friendship. Thank you to the friend who had the courage to clear it up with me and of course during the course of sending Xav to holiday programmes, I met and made friends with some very nice mummies !
My new year resolutions :
- Better time management !Source for more time to source and prepare creative learning resource like before for both Xav and Vera. (Time to bring out my laminating machine and binder) , more PLAY time with both of them.
- Get my own blog domain.
- Scream LESS, keep COOL more often and be more PATIENT with Xav.
- To BLOG more, COOK more, CRAFT more, BAKE more, SEW more and if I can SLEEP more !
- To be more active on my own page on D'sail Creation for customization of wedding cards, ang pow holders, party banners as well as cupcake liners and toppers. Do support ya !
- To put my plans of running kids' workshops from home into action SOON.
- Everyone around me to be in their pink of health, surrounded by joy and happiness always !
This mark the last post for the year 2013 ! What are your New year resolutions ? Jot them down and hope you can work towards them like how I am going to start working towards to mine.
The Chuas wish all a Happy 2014 !!

Tomato Egg Drop Soup
One of the quickfix if you have ready stock. I had ready frozen stock using soya beans and ikan bilis.
Simply just quartered the tomatoes and cook in the pot of boiling stock, crack and drop and egg in it, gently give a little stir. Garnish with some chopped spring onions and a little pepper and you are ready to serve !

Omelette Pork Floss Roll
Last week was pretty bad, hubby was busy with work for that entire week. One of the evenings, I was stuck at home with a baby and a pre-schooler, can't even call for Macdonald's delivery due to a thunderstorm.
Left with no choice but to search through what in my fridge and what dish I can whipped up within a short time frame. No time for defrosting as well !
Found some eggs and pork floss and here it is ! I made omelette with pork floss roll !
I used three eggs, beat the yolks and whites together, add some seasoning like pepper and soy sauce.
Having not been hands on in the kitchen for these past two years, suddenly seems to be a little forgetful ! I should have faced the end of the omelette downwards for a better presentation !
Oh well, anyway, this was very well received by Xav. You think he would be bothered which side is facing which ? He just loved the pork floss and the pandas =p

Ice Vault 18
[Ceased operation] updated Apr 2018
If you are craving for nice Taiwanese Dessert and have tried Blackball, you should give Ice Vault 18 a try ! Personally I find the taste and texture better than Blackball !
Nested in the neighbourhood in the eastern part of Singapore, you can find Ice Vault 18 located on the ground floor, opposite All Saints Home along Blk 476 Tammpines St 44 #01-175A S(520476)
Initially, I got to taste Ice Vault 18's signature when my sis packed it back for me. I love the chewy texture of the black sugar q, yam and sweet potato balls!
The lady boss further added on that their grass jelly are imported from Taiwan and the rest are handmade and cooked with their special formula which includes their beancurd and syrup.
Check out their menu which includes :
