At heART Studio, apart from paints, clay work is another art medium taught. At heART Studio, the kids were taught to create their own clay tiles and were taught what air dry clay and Relief Sculpture was.
It was more than just giving the clay to the kids, the process flow which involved a lot more steps and not forgetting the planning. I felt that this project was not just about art, it was a project with alot of new words taught to her. Just on the different techniques, Vera learnt about knead, roll, pinch, coil etching(scrape) as well as score and slip, the different techniques which involved her fine motor skill which is so essential for penmanship.
But first, she has to decide what designs she would like to have on her tile by drawing out as part of the planning. For someone who does not like repetition, this drawing can be a challenge to her but from the look of it, she seemed to have more patience for it and completed the task.
At times when she could not digest too much information, this was what happened, to roll or to spray water?
Initially, the fear of getting her hands 'dirty', she was trying so hard to keep her hands 'clean' but slowly as she got into the process, she started to enjoy the rolling.
She had to cut out the shape on the clay, following the plan she drew earlier. This was the part she learnt that she should not draw the shapes too small otherwise she would be facing challenges to cut them out.
Vera had to learn to control her strength as well, testing very much on muscle control.
She learnt how to make the slip to glue the clay together and joining the clay together at the edges.
She had to draw the design on the cut-out clay following her planned drawings.
Definitely a project with alot of information to digest and under the patient guidance, Vera completed the project with the whole project broken down into bite-size which is definitely manageable for kids.
Vera is currently in Little Picasso (Suitable for 6-8 yo) and these are the programmes for the various age group:
